  14. was announced today by JPL Director Dr. William H. Pickering.
  15.   
  16.           Henry W. Norris was named Viking Orbiter manager; 
  17.   
  18. Kermit S. Watkins, deputy manager; Allen E. Wolfe, spacecraft
  19.   
  20. system manager; and Dr. Conway W. Snyder, Viking Orbiter
  21. scientist. 
  22.   
  23.           The Viking Project, designed to send two orbiters
  24. with 
  25.   
  26. landing capsules to Mars in 1973, is managed for the National
  27.   
  28. Aeronautics and Space Administration by the NASA Langley
  29. Research 
  30.   
  31. Center in Hampton, Virginia. 
  32.   
  33.           The newly-established office at JPL is responsible
  34. for 
  35.   
  36. the design and development of the orbiting spacecraft portion
  37. of 
  38.   
  39. the Viking system and the conduct of the orbiter phase of the
  40.   
  41. mission.  The Laboratory is responsible also for Viking
  42. tracking 
  43.   
  44. and data acquisition. 
  45.   
  46.           Norris was JPL's spacecraft system manager for the
  47.   
  48. Mariner Mars l969 Project.  He was named to the Viking position 
  49.   
  50. after the successful launch of Mariner VI last February and
  51. Mariner 
  52.   
  53. VII in March.  The two Mariner spacecraft will arrive at Mars
  54. in 
  55.   
  56. July and August, respectively. 
  57.   
  58.           Watkins was assistant project manager for the
  59. Surveyor 
  60.   
  61. series of lunar soft-landing spacecraft and general manager
  62. of 
  63.   
  64. project operations for the Laboratory's Office of Flight
  65. Projects.

  97. and to Mars in 1965 by Mariner IV.

  99.           The two Viking Orbiter spacecraft will circle Mars in
